kol-

Meaning:
ask for; request; implore
Details:

kol- means “to ask for, request, seek” and, in more urgent or religious contexts, “to implore, beg”. The requested thing normally functions as the direct object, while the person or source from whom it is requested may be expressed in the ablative. Uses such as kut kol- “implore grace, good fortune or salvation” are contextual developments of the same meaning.

The verb survives in the Lutsk and Trakai varieties of Karaim as kol- (קול) “to ask, request”. Räsänen (1969) also records Western Yugur kol- “to ask, beg”, but its present-day status is uncertain.

Clauson (1972) tentatively proposed a secondary stem kolt- because derivatives such as koltgučı “beggar” contain a t. Erdal (2004, p. 114) instead explains it as a parasitic t inserted between l and the following velar consonant.
