kudı is a directional adverb and postposition meaning “down, downwards; below”. Older academics commonly transcribe it as kodı, and Clauson writes koḏı:, but recent lexicography prefers kudı.

In Irk Bitig 44, täŋridän kudı means “down from the sky” and describes the downward trajectory of the falcon as it swoops upon the hare. The word can also function postpositionally, as in Säläŋä kudı “down the Selenga”, referring to movement downstream along the river.

Erdal plausibly connects kudı historically with kud- “to pour”, since liquids naturally flow downwards. The original sense may therefore have been “in the direction of the flow, downstream”, later extended to downward movement in general.
