Dev. N. fr. üle:-; ‘share, part’, (in the sense of one of several equal shares or parts); hence, metaph., ‘destiny, fate’. Less common in modern times than the syn. word ülüş but survives in NE (several dialects) ülü: R I 1850; Tuv. ülüg, and, with a wide range of meanings, SW xx Anat. ülü SDD 1430.
