üt

Meaning:
advice; counsel

üt means ‘advice, counsel, admonition’; in Old Turkic texts it can also denote an injunction or instruction and, more broadly, education or upbringing. It commonly occurs in paired expressions such as üt sav, üt ärig and üt bilig, and with al- ‘take, accept, heed’. In Irık Bitig 58 the returning son says ögüm ütin alayın, kaŋım savın tıŋlayın ‘I will accept my mother’s advice and listen to my father’s words’.

The vowel is now securely read as ü. Erdal points to three Brāhmī attestations which establish the vowel and explicitly rejects Clauson’s derivation from ö- ‘think, remember’ plus -t. The ultimate etymology of üt remains uncertain. ögüt ‘advice’ is separately attested already in Old Turkic and should not be silently identified with üt; a historical relationship is possible, but has not been securely demonstrated.
