tan

Meaning:
body

The prevailing etymology treats tan as an early Iranian loan, possibly from Middle Persian tan or Sogdian tn. Dybo distinguishes this early borrowing from later New Persian loans of the type ten/tĂ€n; their similarity does not establish direct descent from the Old Turkic word. Yalçın has alternatively argued for a Turkic origin involving yin “body, skin”.
