tatar
Meaning:
Tatar (historical Inner Asian people)
The early ethnonym tatar designated Inner Asian groups associated in later historical studies with the Mongolic-speaking world. It must not be identified without qualification with today’s Turkic-speaking Tatars: after the Mongol conquests, the name spread to other peoples and underwent substantial changes of reference. Its ultimate etymology is uncertain.
