İbrahim Kekevi (2020) Kutadgu Bilig’de Geçen “Esri” (Kaplan) Sözcüğündeki Anlam Değişimip. 719, section 3, first two paragraphsp. 719, section 3, first two paragraphs
Orta Türkçe dönemi eserlerinde ve tarihî lehçelerde rastladığımız sözcüğe kaplanın yanı sıra leopar, panter, pars anlamları verildiği görülmektedir. Marcel Erdal’ın Old Turkic Word Formation adlı çalışmasında sözcüğe “damalı, muhtelif ve çeşitli anlamlarının verir.

Anderson 2002, who deals with the categories described in this section, also posits a category of “orientation” among them, with two members expressing motion away from and towards the speaker: a translocative in bar- ‘to go’, as in äsri amga yalïm kayaka ünüp barmïš ‘A dappled wild goat went up a steep cliff’ (IrqB) and a cislocative in käl- ‘to come’, as in süt akïp kälti ‘milk came flowing out’ (Suv 621,15). uč- ‘to fly (off)’ and uča bar- ‘to fly off’, both used as euphemisms for ‘dying’, are another example for the (not purely spatial) content of this opposition. -

Marcel Erdal (1991) Old Turkic Word Formationp. 163, äsri+ŋü paragraph and footnote 221p. 163, äsri+ŋü paragraph and footnote 221
äsri+ŋü ‘motley, checkered, sundry, various’ has exs. in the EDPT and additional ones in UigTot 687 and 972, ShōAv 163, Ht IV 1029, HtPek 119 b6-10 (quoted in the n. to Ht X 60), Suv 384,19 and 574,16-19, BT VIII B 134, ETS 16,66 and 20,12 and 121, BT VIII C15, BuddhUig II 76 and 390, BT XIII 46,7 etc.; it is thus much better attested than äsri. In the IrqB äsri describes all sorts of spotted animals; but its central meaning, noted by the DLT and later sources and the only one found in the QB, was ‘leopard’.221 The etymological connection is clear, but the meanings of base and derivate make it impossible that äsriŋü should belong to this formation unless we take both to have undergone some extreme semantic shifts.
221 Note that the Hebrew word signifying ‘spotted, dappled’ also comes from the name of the ‘leopard’, namer. While äsri and kaplan are Turkic for ‘leopard’ and ‘tiger’ respectively, bars is borrowed. -
