üçürgü
üçürgü denotes a thick felt pad placed beneath the saddle. In Irık Bitig 50, tokuz kat üçürgüŋ topulgınça täritzün means approximately “let [the horse] sweat until your nine-layer saddle felt is torn through”. The context therefore points specifically to an under-saddle felt or sweat pad rather than merely an outer decorative saddlecloth.
The older reading öçürgü and Clauson’s derivation from öçür- “extinguish” are no longer convincing; the former is explicitly marked as an obsolete reading in modern lexicography. Räsänen connected the word with iç “inside”. Tezcan first proposed the same base with regressive vowel assimilation and later suggested iç-ür- “imbibe, absorb” as the more likely source, an analysis preferred by Erdal. A cautious reconstruction is therefore *içürgü → üçürgü; this etymology is probable rather than certain.
