The internal etymology is disputed. The first part of arslan has been connected both with arsal/arsıl “auburn, bay” and comparable forms meaning “wild, fierce”, and with a roar-imitating base; analyses of the final element also differ. The often-proposed segmentation arsıl + -an/-lan should therefore not be treated as certain.
