bulıt

Meaning:
cloud

bulıt means ā€œcloudā€. It is clearly attested in Irık Bitig 52–53: teŋri bulıtlıg boltı ... bulıt ara kün tugmış describes the sky becoming cloudy and the sun appearing among the clouds, while boz bulıt yorıdı ... kara bulıt yorıdı ... describes grey and black clouds moving and bringing rain. Other Old Turkic attestations include kara bulıt ā€œblack cloudā€ and ak bulıt ā€œrain cloudā€.

The deeper etymology is uncertain. Erdal reconstructs an earlier *bılıt, regarding the first-syllable rounding in bulıt as secondary; Sakha bılıt and Chuvash pĕlĕt provide important comparative support. The later rounded form bulut became widespread throughout Turkic. RƤsƤnen's derivation from bulga- ā€œmix, make turbidā€ is possible but morphologically unclear, while analyses of final -t as an archaic collective or plural element remain speculative. No primary vowel length is securely supported.
