il
Meaning:
forecourt; area at an entrance
The spatial noun il must be distinguished from the similar el/il “state, realm”. The association of “front” with “east” is conventionally explained by the east-facing entrances of early Turkic dwellings; the latter is a historical interpretation, not an independently established meaning for every occurrence of the bare noun.
