Otherwise one seems to find only imperfect pairs such as tï:t- ‘to tear to shreds’ (and tït ‘larch tree’) vs. tit- ‘to renounce’, and ïl- ‘to descend’ vs. i:l- ‘to catch, cling, attach’; the last mentioned verb in fact originally started with an /h/, as the numerous examples with #y° show. Johanson 1991: 85 gives the DLT opposition il- : ïl- as an example for the reality of the front / back distinction in Qarakhanid. Kāšġarī (fol.94) does, indeed write that the infinitive of the former is spelled with kāf, that of the latter with qāf, and that the former’s aorist is ilär, the latter’s ïlur. The aorist distinction between the two verbs is borne out also by the QB; not, however, the backness distinction; there, both verbs are front: From the verb signifying ‘to descend’ we find ilgü in QB 1086 (ms. AB; C replaces it with the better-known en-) and ilmäk in 1762 (only C; A yïlmaq, B enmäk); the meanings are clear in both cases. -
