*busa- is a reconstructed verbal base and is not independently attested in Old Turkic. It is reconstructed to account for a coherent word family, especially busan- “to grieve, worry” (*busa- + reflexive -n-), busuş “grief, sorrow” and busanç “grief”. The derived stem busan- also survives in later Turkic, notably Crimean Tatar busanmaq “to grieve, worry, be anxious”, and an early western form *busan- is reflected in Hungarian bosszant “to annoy”. The reconstructed base therefore probably meant approximately “to trouble, distress, sadden”.
