Details:
The word tügünük is most probably related to tügün “knot”, from the verb tüg- “to tie”. The idea is likely that the smoke-hole at the top of a yurt was not merely an open hole, but originally referred to a tied / closed / gathered opening in the roof of a tent. In that sense, the connection with “knot” becomes understandable: the whole opening could be conceived as something tied together, and the word then came to denote the smoke-hole itself.
