nĂ€lĂŒk

Meaning:
for what purpose?

nĂ€lĂŒk is an interrogative adverb meaning ‘why?, for what reason?, for what purpose?’.

KāƥgarÄ« states that nĂ€Ă§ĂŒk ‘why?’ was characteristic of the Yabāqu dialect, whereas the other Turks used nĂ€lĂŒk.

The derivation of the word has been explained in different ways:

  • Clauson–Erdal (probable; preferred): nĂ€ + +aguÂČ â†’ nĂ€gĂŒ, followed by +lık⁎ → nĂ€gĂŒlĂŒk. Reduction produced nĂ€glĂŒk, from which the common nĂ€lĂŒk arose by further contraction. Clauson likewise regards nĂ€lĂŒk as a crasis of nĂ€gĂŒlĂŒk.
  • Barutçu (possible; disputed): the word is instead derived from nĂ€ by means of an adverb-forming +lı⁎, giving reconstructed *nĂ€li ‘how’, followed by the emphatic particle ök: *nĂ€li ök → nĂ€lĂŒk.
  • A direct analysis as nĂ€ + +lık⁎ is improbable. Since nĂ€ has an unrounded front vowel, the harmonic suffix would be expected in its unrounded form +lik, not +lĂŒk. Such an analysis therefore leaves the rounded ĂŒ unexplained, as Clauson already noted, whereas the independently attested synonymous nĂ€gĂŒlĂŒk and the reduced form nĂ€glĂŒk provide a concrete historical path to nĂ€lĂŒk.

Modern continuations survive in lexicalized ablative forms: Kazakh nelikten, Kyrgyz nelikten and Karakalpak nelikten ‘why, for what reason’, Tatar nilektĂ€n and Bashkir nilektĂ€n.
